Why Your AC Struggles When Los Lunas Hits 100°F (and What to Check)

Optimal PHC June 18, 2026 5 min read Air Conditioning

Your air conditioner runs all day, but the house never quite gets comfortable. When Los Lunas hits triple digits, a system that handled milder weather fine can suddenly fall behind. Sometimes that is a sign of a real problem. Sometimes it is the heat simply pushing your equipment to its limit.

Here are the most common reasons an AC struggles in peak Central New Mexico heat, what you can check yourself, and when it is time for a same-day repair.

First, set realistic expectations

Most central air systems are designed to cool a home to roughly 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature. When it is 102 degrees outside, a healthy system may only pull the inside down to the low 80s during the hottest part of the afternoon, then catch up as evening comes. If your house is holding that kind of gap and recovering at night, the system is likely working as intended. If the gap keeps widening, something needs attention.

Dirty coils and clogged filters

This is the most common culprit, and the easiest to prevent. The outdoor condenser coil releases the heat your AC pulls from inside. When it is caked with dust, cottonwood fluff, or yard debris, it cannot shed heat efficiently, and cooling drops off right when you need it most. A clogged indoor filter does the same thing by choking airflow. Check and replace your filter, and gently clear visible debris from around the outdoor unit.

Low refrigerant

If your system is low on refrigerant, it cannot absorb heat properly, and you will notice weak cooling, longer run times, or ice forming on the lines. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low levels almost always mean a leak. This is not a DIY fix. It requires a licensed technician to find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system correctly.

An undersized or aging system

An AC that was undersized for the home, or one that is simply old, will struggle most on the hottest days. As systems age, they lose efficiency and capacity. If your unit is well over a decade old and falls further behind every summer, the long-term answer may be a properly sized replacement rather than another repair. The key word is properly sized, which comes from a load calculation rather than a guess.

Duct losses in a hot attic

In our area, ductwork running through a blazing attic can lose a surprising amount of the cooled air you are paying for. Leaks, disconnected sections, and poor insulation mean the air never fully reaches your rooms. If some rooms stay hot while others are fine, duct problems are a likely cause and worth having evaluated.

Thermostat issues

Before assuming the worst, rule out the thermostat. A failing thermostat, dead batteries, or a unit placed in direct sun or near a heat source can misread the temperature and short-cycle the system. It is a small thing that is easy to check and sometimes the whole problem.

What you can do right now

Replace the air filter, clear debris from around the outdoor unit, confirm all supply vents are open and unblocked, and check the thermostat settings and batteries. Give the system time to recover after the hottest part of the day. If none of that closes the gap, or you see ice on the lines, hear unusual noises, or the unit will not keep up at all, it is time to bring in a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?

The most common causes are a dirty condenser coil, a clogged filter, low refrigerant from a leak, leaky ductwork, or a failing thermostat. In extreme heat, an aging or undersized system may also simply be at its limit. Checking the filter and clearing the outdoor unit is a good first step.

How cold should my AC make the house when it’s 100 degrees out?

Most systems are designed to cool to about 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature. At 100 degrees, reaching the low 80s during peak afternoon and recovering in the evening can be normal. If the gap keeps growing, the system needs attention.

Is low refrigerant something I can fix myself?

No. Low refrigerant almost always means a leak, and recharging without repairing the leak only masks the problem. A licensed technician needs to locate the leak, fix it, and recharge the system to the correct level.
