Comprehensive Gas Furnace Services from Licensed Technicians

Gas furnaces contain combustion components, safety controls, and venting systems that all need to function correctly together for the unit to operate safely and efficiently. Optimal PHC takes a whole system approach to gas furnace service that goes beyond just the reported symptom. When we service a gas furnace, we check combustion quality, verify proper gas pressure, inspect the heat exchanger, test all safety controls, and confirm that the venting system is drawing correctly and discharging combustion gases safely to the exterior. These are not optional steps. A gas furnace with a cracked heat exchanger, inadequate combustion air, or improper venting is a safety hazard that can result in carbon monoxide exposure. Our technicians understand these risks and take them seriously. Serving Los Lunas, Belen, Socorro, Bosque Farms, Peralta, Albuquerque, and Rio Rancho, Optimal PHC is the team you want handling the gas equipment in your home. We do not cut corners on safety.

Signs Your Gas Furnace May Need Service

  • Your furnace ignites but the flame shuts off after a few seconds. This is a classic flame sensor problem. The flame sensor detects the presence of the burner flame and tells the furnace control board the system is operating normally. When the sensor is coated with oxidation, it cannot detect the flame reliably and the control board shuts off gas flow as a safety measure. The sensor needs to be cleaned or replaced.
  • You smell a faint gas odor when the furnace first starts up. A very brief gas smell at ignition can sometimes occur normally as unburned gas passes the igniter before the flame establishes. However, any persistent gas smell or odor between cycles should be taken seriously. Turn off the furnace at the thermostat and call us to have the gas connections and valve inspected.
  • Your furnace is producing insufficient heat even when running normally. A gas furnace that is running but not producing adequate heat may have dirty burners reducing combustion efficiency, a partially clogged heat exchanger, a gas valve that is not fully opening, or a blower issue that is not distributing heat effectively. Each of these requires a different repair.
  • Your carbon monoxide detector has alarmed and the furnace is the likely source. Take this extremely seriously. Carbon monoxide is odorless and can be produced by a gas furnace with a cracked heat exchanger or improper combustion. If your CO detector alarms, evacuate immediately, leave doors open, and call from outside. Do not re enter until the situation has been evaluated by a professional.

Gas Furnace FAQs

Everything you need to know about our gas furnace services in Los Lunas and the greater Albuquerque area.

What is the difference between single stage, two stage, and variable speed gas furnaces?

Single stage furnaces run at full capacity whenever they are on. Two stage furnaces have a low and a high fire setting, allowing them to run at reduced capacity most of the time and only go to full capacity in very cold conditions. Variable speed refers to the blower motor, which adjusts airflow continuously for better temperature consistency and efficiency. Two stage and variable speed systems are more comfortable and efficient but cost more upfront.

How often does a gas furnace need maintenance?

Annual maintenance is the standard recommendation. Gas furnaces should be inspected and serviced once per year, ideally in the fall before heating season. Regular maintenance keeps the system operating safely and efficiently and catches developing problems before they become breakdowns or safety concerns.

Can a gas furnace produce carbon monoxide?

Yes. All gas combustion appliances produce carbon monoxide as a byproduct of combustion. In a properly functioning furnace, the CO is contained in the heat exchanger and vented safely outside. A cracked heat exchanger allows CO to enter the air stream. Every home with a gas furnace should have functioning CO detectors on every level.

Is it expensive to convert from electric heat to a gas furnace?

Conversion costs depend on whether natural gas is already available to your home. If a gas line is not already present, running service from the street adds significant cost. If gas is available, the conversion involves gas line connection to the furnace, installing appropriate venting, and replacing the existing heating equipment. We can assess the full scope and cost for your specific situation.

Do you service older gas furnaces or only newer models?

We service gas furnaces of all ages. Older units sometimes present challenges with obsolete parts, but our technicians are experienced with older equipment and can advise you on part availability and whether it makes more sense to repair or replace a unit of a certain age and condition.
