The Town of Bernalillo runs its own wells, and the water chemistry here is not the same as Albuquerque's two exits south. We work the historic core and the newer east bench alike. Licensed, insured, same-day available.
Bernalillo is the Sandoval County seat and one of the oldest continuously settled places in New Mexico, founded by Don Diego de Vargas in 1695 on ground that had been occupied for centuries before that. It is worth being precise about the name: this is the Town of Bernalillo in Sandoval County, not Bernalillo County, which is a different jurisdiction thirty minutes south containing Albuquerque. Search results confuse the two constantly.
The town sits at about 5,050 feet on the valley floor, rising to roughly 5,140 on the east bench toward I-25. That valley floor is around 265 feet below the Albuquerque airport station everyone borrows design temperatures from, which nudges the altitude derate on gas appliances slightly in your favor. Housing here is newer than the history suggests, with a median build year of 1992 and about 31 percent predating 1980, and it is overwhelmingly a natural gas town at just over 80 percent.
What makes the service work distinct is the water and the ground. The town runs its own groundwater system, and it has spent fifteen years managing arsenic in it. Meanwhile close to 43 percent of the town sits inside a FEMA flood hazard area, a good share of that shallow sheet flow off the bench rather than river overbank. We are about 49 miles up I-25, with no travel surcharge, flat-rate pricing in writing, and a one-year labor warranty.

Bernalillo runs its own system on 100 percent groundwater, serving about 10,948 people through roughly 3,400 connections. The most recent report shows arsenic at 0.011 parts per million against a federal limit of 0.010, and the town's own language is that it tested just above the standard. The town adopted a ferric chloride removal process back in 2010 after a run of exceedance notices. It is not a violation, it is a system managed continuously right at the line, and it is mineral-heavy water that shortens water heater life.
The town does not report hardness or total dissolved solids in any of its water quality reports. That is normal, because hardness is an aesthetic parameter and not required. What it means practically is that any grains per gallon figure you find for Bernalillo online came from a filter vendor rather than the utility. The only honest way to size a softener here is to test the water at your tap, which we do.
We measured the FEMA maps against the actual town boundary: about 42.9 percent falls inside a Special Flood Hazard Area. What is interesting is the mix. Roughly 12.5 percent is shallow sheet flow and ponding rather than river overbank, which is arroyo drainage coming off the bench. That is a direct argument about where a condenser pad, a furnace and a water heater should sit in the low-lying parts of the old town.
The Bernalillo Acequia and the Sandia Acequia run through residential parcels here, along with the Bernalillo Interior and Riverside Drains and the Albuquerque Main Canal. They are fed off the Angostura Diversion Dam about six miles north and managed by the conservancy district, and they descend directly from Spanish colonial ditches. Seasonal irrigation right against a foundation affects crawlspaces, slab edges and buried lines.
Town code requires you to connect to the public sanitary sewer when your property line falls within 200 feet of it, with 90 days from notice. Septic is legal only where sewer is genuinely unavailable, needs a state liquid waste permit, and requires a minimum three quarter acre lot for a subsurface absorption system. Once sewer becomes available you have 90 days to convert. If you are weighing a system replacement, that rule usually decides it for you.
The valley floor is Jocity and Aga loam, young river alluvium, moderately well drained and slower to take water. Cross toward I-25 and you are in Stumble and Sheppard sands that drain fast and trench easily. Neither is expansive clay, despite what people assume. Same town, two very different excavations, and it changes how a sewer lateral or a gas line run gets priced.

We cover the whole town, from the old colonial core around Las Cocinitas out to the newer development on the east bench. El Llanito on the northeast is its own historic hamlet and worth naming separately, because people there tend to say El Llanito rather than Bernalillo.
Camino del Pueblo is the main street and it wears more names than any road we work: it is NM 313, it was historic Route 66, it was El Camino Real, and it was Old State Highway 85. Pat D'Arco Highway through town is NM 528, and East Avenida Bernalillo is NM 473. One caution worth stating: Enchanted Hills and Rio Rancho Boulevard show up in searches for this area but they are Rio Rancho, not Bernalillo.
87004 is the single ZIP for Bernalillo. Not sure whether your address falls inside our area? Call (505) 933-3060 and we will tell you straight.
We answer around the clock in Bernalillo. Burst pipes, failed water heaters, dead furnaces in a cold snap, and AC that quits in a heat wave do not wait for morning, and neither do we.
