Algodones is an unincorporated community in Sandoval County, about seven and a third square miles strung along NM 313 between Bernalillo and San Felipe Pueblo. The 2020 Census counted 720 residents in 282 housing units. It has its own ZIP, 87001, which surprises people who assume it shares Bernalillo's 87004. It does not.
NM 313 through town is signed El Camino Real, and that is not decoration. The narrow pass just north of here, La Angostura, controlled movement along the Camino Real for centuries and carried fortifications going back to the early seventeenth century. I-25 runs along the eastern edge now, with frontage roads on both sides.

Only about 9 percent of Algodones falls inside a mapped Special Flood Hazard Area, and that piece sits on the west edge toward the Rio Grande. The other 90 percent is FEMA Zone D, and Zone D does not mean low risk. It means the flood hazard has never been determined. There is no published base flood elevation anywhere in the community and the flood maps in force date to 2008. So the honest answer about your lot is that nobody has studied it, which is a reason to make deliberate choices about where a water heater or furnace sits rather than assuming you are fine.
About 53 percent of Algodones rates High for risk of corrosion to uncoated steel and another 44 percent rates Moderate, so roughly 97 percent of the community is one or the other. The High areas are the valley floor soils where the housing actually is: Gilco, Aga, Jocity, Trail and Peralta. On top of that, the moderately saline and sodic phases rate High corrosion to concrete across about 15 percent of the community. Buried gas line, water service, and anything set in a slab all deserve material choices made for this ground. One thing we will not sell you: Algodones is not an expansive clay town. Shrink-swell here is low.
The Algodones water association serves about 155 connections and roughly 416 people, against 282 housing units and 720 residents counted in 2020. That leaves something like four in ten households on individual domestic wells. Combine a 21 degree average night with a furnace already losing 12.4 percent to altitude and you have the argument for sizing off real design conditions instead of a rule of thumb, plus freeze protection that actually gets checked before November.
Around 73 percent of occupied homes in Algodones heat with utility natural gas. Unincorporated does not mean propane here. Two amendments New Mexico wrote into its own mechanical code apply to every gas job: copper and copper alloy pipe is prohibited for fuel gas, and an additional approved shutoff valve is required downstream of the utility meter before gas distributes into the house piping. Both get missed by crews working from the national code text alone, and both are the kind of thing that turns into a failed inspection.

NM 313, El Camino Real, is the main street and most of the community is reached from it. I-25 runs the eastern edge with East Frontage Road and West Frontage Road serving properties on both sides, and NM 315 comes off it as well. Named local roads include Camino Karsten, Budagher Drive, Hagan Road, Meadowview Road and Centro. Angostura and Las Colonias are both documented place names within the community.
Algodones Elementary School is on Highway 313, as is the PNM generating station, and the post office is in town. Children go to Algodones Elementary and then to Bernalillo for middle and high school. Fire and emergency response is Sandoval County Fire and Rescue, South Fire District, which also covers Santa Ana Pueblo and Placitas. San Felipe Pueblo lies immediately north and west, Santo Domingo further north, and Bernalillo is about six miles south.
